Legend tells that a glass bottomed tankard was a way of refusing the King's shilling, used to lure potential recruits into conscription to the British Army or Navy. If a glass tankard was used, the drinker could see the coin in the bottom of the glass and refuse the drink, thereby avoiding conscription.
